How a Childhood Dream Led Me to Buy My First Hoverboard

I was about 10 years old when the second Back to The Future movie hit California’s theaters.
I was a big fan of the first one, and had fought my way to the ticket booth to get a seat for the first day, first show.

Rumor had it the movie was set partly in future, so I was excited to see it.

2 hours later, when I left the theatre, mesmerized by the movie, I could not stop thinking about the movie, especially the part where they showed how the future in 2015 would look like. One of the things that captured my imagination was Marty’s hoverboard.

Today, it is already 2016, and among the few things that the movie got right, one was the ‘hoverboard’.

I am a big fan of Marty’s hoverboard, and I hoped we had it for real by 2015, so that we could buy hoverboards and glide on them, from one place to another.
While we didn’t get them, the two-wheeled self-balancing scooters came into existence and became extremely popular among fans in North America. None of them seemed to mind that it was already 2016, and we still didn’t have a mass-produced flying hoverboard.

Eventually, I bought a self-balancing hoverboard too, accepting the fact that I’ll have to do with the existing ones. They actually were quite fun to ride. I learnt to ride one pretty quickly and have been riding it ever since.

With the range my hoverboard offered, I found out that I could make it to office on a single charge, although I’d have to charge it before I could make my way back home.
It helped me outrun traffic, which has become a great advantage for me as I live and work in Southern California (traffic here is nasty).

I had been waiting to buy a hoverboard since I was 10, and while I couldn’t buy one like Marty’s, nonetheless, I’m happy that we have something similar to enjoy in the meantime until a hovering board is invented.
